How are autism and chiropractic care related?
The direct connection between autism disorders and chiropractic services may not be immediately obvious. Autism is primarily viewed as a behavioral issue, and little is known about the direct causes that lead to autism. However, when viewed from a different perspective, the connection between chiropractic and autism is clear. Researchers know that autism is a neurological problem. Chiropractic care is directed toward correcting misalignment that has a negative impact on the body’s central nervous system. When those issues are addressed, it is no surprise that autism and other neurological problems can improve.
What should parents expect from chiropractic care for their autistic child?
Parents who come in for autism spectrum treatment should be prepared to provide a full health history, as well as information about their child’s autism symptoms and behavioral challenges. Next, a full chiropractic exam will be given, which is very much like a routine physical, but with special focus placed on screening for signs of neurological problems. Special diagnostic testing may also be necessary depending on the child’s comfort throughout the procedure; this would include rolling thermography, surface electromyography, and heart rate variability testing. The chiropractor will discuss treatment options with the parents before creating a treatment plan. Adjustments may begin on the very first visit.
Are chiropractic adjustments painful for children?
Chiropractic adjustments are not painful for anyone, including children. Unless there is a physical condition such as an injury or skin irritation at the time of the appointment, chiropractic care should lead to no sensation of pain or discomfort. This differentiates from the traditional “cracking” chiropractic technique that many people associate with chiropractic care to a more gentle chiropractic treatment.
